For the sake of it

Today I made a dress, ostensibly for Lucy. It's the O+S Playdate dress. I've always had mixed feelings about this dress - there are some I really like (there are quite a few in my Flickr favourites), but overall there's just something about this that has stopped me from making it (I just can't really see either of my girls wearing it, I guess).

But a while ago (a long while ago now!), a lovely friend set herself the challenge of sewing all her unused O+S patterns, and invited a few others to join her - and as I had many patterns still unused, I decided to join her. She finished her list in an amazingly short time, but of course, I am still plodding along....

Here was my original list:

Music Class
Playdate
After School
Croquet
Badminton
Secret Agent
Seashore
Family Reunion
School Days
School Photo
Apple Picking

And then two O+S PDF patterns somehow managed to be mine (oh, how I suffer from finger slips ), so to this list were added the Hula Hoop skirt and the Firefly jacket.

I've made pretty good progress on the list, but have been stuck on the last few, the Playdate being one of them. I debated for quite sometime over what fabric to use, and finally settled on a ditsy floral:

I really can't see it being worn a great deal (although my contrary child was thrilled with it this afternoon, and has asked to wear it to preschool tomorrow). It was made more for myself rather than for Lucy - which actually seems to be what most of my sewing is lately anyway!

  1. You are making such good progress on the O+S patterns and they all look lovely. I've said it before, you have such a good eye for fabric and always choose the right fabric for each project.
I still have 6 yet to make up from the entire collection and then there's the 2 new ones coming out......

    1. Thank you Deb - O+S patterns have become a 'collectible' to me. My list was ridiculously long - I am determined to get there though (although I failed to mention the Fairy Tale and the Book Report in that list!)

  2. I think I know what you mean about the playdate, Justine. Something about that pretty bib makes it seem so dressy to me. I will be making one soon, so we'll see how much wear it gets! I suspect it will be worn quite a bit, since Clara loves dressy things. Not sure I'll go with the white bib, though. She's an awfully messy girl :)

    1. Yes,I think it is the bib, Sandi - plus the neckline is very high. I did think about making the bib with the dress fabric, but thought it would be totally hidden with the busy fabric. Contrary Miss has just come downstairs wearing it!
      Can't wait to see Clara's

  3. Oooh, I love the vintage-y vibe of the Playdate dress, although it's not one of the ones that I've bought, so maybe I have similar issues! I love your version, though!

I should join this challenge! I am developing quite a pile of o+s that I haven't actually sewn up!

    1. Thanks Inder - surprisingly, she wore this all day today :-) - so she obviously doesn't share my issues!

O+S patterns so easily become an obsession, huh?

    1. Thanks Martha :-)
I was pleasantly surprised as to how easy this was to make - and without the piping, it would be very quick. Nicole has a fab tutorial on her blog

  7. Did you really start off with such a long list of patterns?! You have done so well to get through them. I still adore your Seashore dress, it is one of my favourites.

Have you made the Firefly Jacket yet? I bought it when first released but am stalling on it for some reason. Fabric dilemma I think.

    1. Oh, it's embarrassing but yes, I did! I do own them all though, so that means I have used an awful lot of them already. And I am nearly at the end of the list :-)

I still have yet to make the Firefly jacket - it's one of those troublesome ones for me too. Might try it for this winter though....
